What is Form in music? Is it a pattern? Does it repeat? Do you find this pattern in lots of songs or just in one? These are the questions students have been answering in our music classes. Student in 2nd grade have also been experimenting with changing tempos, and students in 4th and 5th grades have been perfecting their listening skills to identify different instrument sounds, or timbres, used as characters in "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev. There is always a lot of learning going on here at Young Scholars.

And students in fourth and fifth grades have been learning about Sergei Prokofiev and his famous piece "Peter and the Wolf", that uses different orchestra instruments to represent the characters in the story.

Students have been learning about telling musical stories. Kindergarten and 1st grade created a sound story with pictures titled "The Elephant and the Waterfall". Students in 2nd grade learned about the different ways we tell stories with music, using words, movements like in a ballet, or just changing the musical instruments. Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades are writing about the piece "Troika" by Sergei Prokofiev and trying to guess what story the music could be telling. See the link below to hear and decide for yourself.

What things unite us in our winter celebrations? Do you and your family decorate with lights? Do you light candles? Maybe you cook and eat special foods this time of year. As students continue learning to perform our songs for Sweets and Treats next week, we are also sharing stories of how, even if we celebrate different holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, Las Posadas, or Kwanzaa, there are traditions that we share.
