It is hard to believe that the end of another marking period is upon us. Last week our students celebrated their Music Fun Days for following all the music class rules throughout the past 9 weeks. This week, our students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades have been working very hard learning music symbols and terminology. We have been playing music bingo to review. Second graders have been composing their own ostinato (a repeated musical phrase or rhythm) and sharing their composition with their classmates. Kindergarten and 1st grade have been going "All Around the Kitchen" with different dynamics and making different body movements to add to our song. There's always lots of fun learning going on here at Young Scholars.

To close our unit of study of Mozart and opera, 4th and 5th graders are composing their own "opera" song this week. The students in 3rd grade are improving their listening skills by identifying exactly which instrument they hear while we play a Music Football game. The students in 2nd grade are learning "The Farmer's Dairy Key" and how to play a game while they sing along. And Kindergarten and 1st grade are reviewing how to sing and play loudly, medium, or quietly according to our card game with the song "A Tisket, A Tasket". We love to have fun with our music!

Students in 5th, 4th, 3rd, and 2nd grades are finishing our studies of Mozart, practicing singing a song in German from the opera of Hansel and Gretel, and catching up on all our missing work this week. We have also been reading "Encore, Opera Cat" about Alma, the cat who practiced and sang opera.
Kindergarten and 1st grade have been playing Boomwhackers with quiet or loud dynamics to accompany "If You're Happy and You Know It." We just keep adding to all our music skills!

The Magic Flute is one of Mozart's most beloved and widely performed operas. Students have been finishing their study of our January composer of the month with a detailed look at this beloved opera, studying the story, and many characters and how the music, acting, costumes, makeup, sets, and lighting all play a part in helping us understand this story. The links below are of Papageno and Papagena singing about finding each other, and the very end of the entire opera.
Kindergarten and 1st grade are learning about different animals who hibernate during this time of year and using their voices to sing at different dynamic levels in a "Grizzly Bear" song. When the bear is sleeping we sing quietly, but when the bear wakes up we sing 'MAD' loudly.

We are continuing our study of the life and compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart wrote 22 operas. His most famous ones include Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, and The Magic Flute. The Queen of the Night aria (link below) is one of the most famous opera songs Mozart composed. Students have been completing listening workbooks with their thoughts and ratings of this music.
And Kindergarten and 1st grade students have been doing some 'composing' of their own. They have been composing a sound story with different sights on an imaginary train trip.

Celebrate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart! Born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart left one of the most enduring legacies of any composer who ever lived. In roughly 20 years of composing, he wrote over 600 pieces of music. Many of his pieces have become so familiar to us, we probably have not even thought about where they came from.
