11/14/17 Continuing our study of Native American Music, students are learning songs such as "Tall Cedar Tree" and learning about the drums, flutes, and rattles that were traditional instruments of Native American tribes as well as contrasting why they did not play trumpets, flutes, guitars and many other instruments that we know of today. Also, many classes are celebrating Music Fun Days for following all the rules during each music class throughout this grading period.
11/7/17 November is Native American Heritage Month. In honor of this, our 4th and 5th grade students have been learning Native American music including a Sioux lullaby, and a Navajo song, "Jo'ashila" which is translated 'walking together'. And in connection with Veteran's Day celebrations, we also discussed how the Navajo were an important part of the military, especially the contributions of the 'Code Talkers' during World War II. Take a listen to the link below: Jo'ashila Third graders are learning to play recorders, 2nd graders are playing guiro and finger cymbals, and 1st grade and Kindergarten about high and low pitches. Next week: We are looking forward to our Music Fun Days! Many classes have earned games and movies for their excellent learning throughout the last 10 weeks. Keep up the good work students!
10/23/17 What is timbre? Our students have been learning to distinguish different voices--adult men, adult women, or childrens voices. And we have been learning some fun songs for this spooky Halloween season.
10/17/17 Due to the short week, we are finishing up our performances. We are looking ahead to learning all about fall, songs about pumpkins, owls, and spooky stories. We are also studying timbre--the way each instrument or voice sounds unique and different from other instruments or voices.
10/10/17 We are continuing in our assessments this week. Older students are performing melodic or rhythmic ostinatos with African-American songs they have learned. Younger students are demonstrating their abilities to show different forms, patterns and sections of their songs through singing, playing instruments and moving. And next week, I hope to see many of you parents during our parent teacher conference days. Feel free to stop by if you have any questions.
