4/16/24 Do you know the difference in a violin and a flute just by listening to their sound? That is exactly what students in Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade are exploring this week . We are learning all about Timbre. Timbre is different instrument sounds. Students in 3rd grade are continuing learning all about how to play songs on recorders. And students in 4th and 5th grades are learning traditional folk music, instruments and dances of Spain. See the videos below to learn or explore more.
4/2/24 Students in 4th grade have been learning about energy. In music class, we have been exploring music and sound energy. This lead us to explore a timeline of musical innovations in 4th and 5th grade classes. All of these students have always lived in a time of streaming and on demand music. So learning about iPods, CD's, tapes and records has been a new experience for them. Students in 3rd grade are excited to be learning to play recorders, and doing an amazing job at it as well. Students in Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade are exploring and reading melodies and all the ways they move in steps, skips, jumps and repeats. 3/26/23 Students have been busy playing lots of instruments this week. Kindergarten and 1st grade are learning how to play repeated, stepping and skipping melody patterns with lots of Rain Songs. And we are keeping steady beats with beautiful spring flowers on beat street. Second grade students are learning melodies with the fun song "I Have a Car." Students in 3rd grade are just starting to learn to play recorders. And students in 4th and 5th grades are exploring the energy of sound, as well as a musical innovations and technology timeline. 2/20/24 This week we are wrapping up our Black History Month learning of Blues and Jazz with a fun story about the 3 Jazzy Pigs in Kindergarten, singing along with 'Scat' music in 1st grade, and reading all about 'Satchmo's Blues' in 2nd grade. Check the links below to try it at home.
And students in 3rd are playing along with the jazz song 'Take Five.' Calypso is the genre in 4th grade. Students in 5th grade are playing blues walking bass lines and learning biographies and songs of legendary jazz composers and performers Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk. 2/13/24 It's time for jazz, calypso, blues and scat singing. Students in Kindergarten are learning the story about the 3 Jazzy Little Pigs. First grade students are scat singing with Ella Fitzgerald. Students in 2nd grade are learning about Louis Armstrong, nicknamed "Satchmo." 1/30/24 It is almost Groundhog Day! Students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade have been learning songs about this Pennsylvania tradition, as well as exploring AB music form in these fun song. Students in 3rd grade learned more about Pete Seeger with the folk song"This Land Is Your Land." Students in 4th grade are learning about the opera "The Magic Flute" by Mozart. 1/23/24 Students in Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade have been having fun comparing FORMS, or the pattern of our music. Check out the Call and Response Form songs to see more. Students in 3rd grade have learned about the contributions of Pete Seeger in being a music activist and his role at the Inauguration of President Barak Obama . Fourth graders are learning about Mozart. And Fifth grade are learning about African-American Spirituals, "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and "Wade in the Water" that helped slaves on the Underground Railroad escaping to freedom. 1/16/24 There is so much learning going on in Music here at Young Scholars. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade are studying FORM, the pattern or order of a piece of music, with the song "Sing About Martin." They learned sign language with the song too. And students in 2nd Grade created their own 4 beat movement patterns to show the beats of the song as well. Students in 3rd Grade are learning about peace and conflict and Pete Seeger's song and story "Abiyoyo." 10/10/23 Do you ever listen to a piece of music and think that you know where you heard it before? That's a question that students in 4th and 5th grade have been asking as we learn more about composer of the month, Antonin Dvorak. Dvorak's music has been used in many movies and TV shows. 4/25/23 Students in 4th and 5th grades are off to another country in our journey through music and instruments from around the world. This week we are in France, learning about Flutinas, Bugles, and Hurdy Gurdys. Students in 3rd grade went to Puerto Rico to learn a game song, Ambos A Dos. Students in 2nd grade are learning about Timbre, or the special sound of each instrument and how we group instruments into families in the orchestra. 4/18/23 Students in 4th and 5th grades are continuing their journey around the world with music and instruments of Africa like Djembe, Balafon, and Mbira this week. Students in 3rd Grade finished our patriotic songs with singing and playing recorders with "You're a Grand Old Flag." Students in 2nd grade used Chrome Music Lab Song Maker (LINK HERE) to compose their own melody. 1/31/23 It is hard to believe the last day of January is already here. And we are busy learning so many things in Music class at Young Scholars. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade are learning about DYNAMICS, or how loud or quiet is our music. And we've been learning about animals who hibernate, like groundhogs, bears, and hedgehogs. Students in 2nd grade are studying a song in German called "Ein Mannlein" which has a hidden joke in the lyrics. Third grade is getting ready for recorders with "Hot Cross Buns." Fourth grade are learning tall tales with "Cantando Mentiras." And Fifth grade is creating a remix of a popular ragtime song by composer Scott Joplin called "The Entertainer." 10/25/22 This week students are enjoying some fun sing along, play along, and dance along songs for this spooky time of year. We are also learning about how music is used to tell stories. Kindergarten and 1st grade students are learning "Pumpkin, Pumpkin" and "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything." Second grade students are learning "The Owl and the Pumpkin." Third grade students are finding that "Halloween is a Very Unusual Night." And students in 4th and 5th grades are discovering 'Danse Macabre" by Camille Saint-Saens. 10/18/22 This week students in Kindergarten and 1st grade have been exploring steady beat and learning about Hispanic Heritage month with a song from Coco. Students in 2nd grade have practiced adding instruments to "Kye, Kye Kule", a fun movement song from Africa. 10/4/22 This week students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are continuing our study of Latin American Music by learning to clap rhythms, sing, and perform instrument parts to accompany a song in Cha, Cha, Cha style called "Sonando." Students in 2nd grade are chanting along with the rhyme "Riddle Ree." Students in 1st grade are learning more about community helpers with a song about careers in transportation. And Kindergarten have added a few more ABC's of Percussion with Q for Quads that you can hear in a marching band. Check out the videos to see and hear more.
9/27/22 This week students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are learning about Latin American Music for Hispanic Heritage Month. Students in 2nd grade are studying FORM in music with a call and response song. Students in 1st grade are learning more about community helpers with a song about scientists. And students in Kindergarten are continuing our journey through the ABC's of Percussion. We learned "L" is for Lithophone and is made of rocks or stones. 9/20/22 Students in 4th and 5th grade learned more of the Korean song "Arirang" this week and how to play an accompaniment on a virtual xylophone. Click hereto try it yourself. 9/13/22 This week, students in 4th and 5th grades are comparing folk and pop music, traveling to South Korea and learning "Arirang"and K-pop. Students in 3rd grade are practicing rhythms with the rhyme "Alligator Pie" and music football. Second grade students are learning rhythms with "Go Around the Corn, Sally." First graders are singing some great songs about the different jobs of community helpers. And Kindergarten students are beginning our journey through the book the "ABC's of Percussion" and learning lots of alphabet letters and instruments along the way. 9/6/22 Students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade are practicing our OWLS nest expectations and exploring DYNAMICS while using 4 different voices. We are also learning where around our school we can use these voices. Second graders are using "Hop Old Squirrel" to study rhythm. Third graders are adding different instruments to their "Hello To All the Children of the World" song. And 4th and 5th grades are taking a music survey to show what they already know and contribute ideas for what music they like best and would like to know more about. Write the name of a favorite song. Pick something that you love to sing or listen to.
Can you sing or play the song on an instrument?
How did you first hear the song?(someone else singing or playing, on the radio, at school, at a party, etc.)
Draw a simple picture or attach an image to go with the song.
Write a few words or a few sentences about the song. Does the song make you feel happy, sad, silly, calm? Why is the song important or memorable to you?
