Do you think folk music can be 'Patriotic'? Patriotic refers to music that expresses pride in one's own country. Students in 3rd grade have been learning Patriotic songs of "America", "The Star-Spangled Banner", and "You're a Grand Old Flag". We also created a Rooster Rondo. And now we are exploring the work of American composer Aaron Copland. Copland did not like that many composers in the United States seemed to be copying and imitating the style of other composers in Europe and other countries. He wanted his music to sound American. Check out the YouTube videos below for more information.

When we learned about "The Star-Spangled Banner", the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington D.C. has a great interactive site where students can learn all about every aspect of this chapter of our history.

This week's post is actually a throwback to a song 3rd grade learned at the very beginning of the year. Not everyone got to see the original performer Bobby Day singing Rockin' Robin on television. So I added the link below. We are reviewing our favorite activities this week for Music Fun Days.

Third grade students have been learning how to sing hello in many different languages. And we have learned about how children created game songs, like "Pizza Pizza Daddy-O" to play together at recess many years ago. Check out the links below to sing along.

Get up and move! It's important to stay fit and healthy even while we are at still at home. Try out the video activity below to run in place, stretch down to touch toes, jump and clap along with the beat.
Try out the Musication video below. This is perfect for practicing your music skills while at home. First, choose one shape from the four at the bottom of the screen. Next pick any item--- an empty soup can, or a pot lid-- and tap it with a pencil. Or snap, clap or tap a table to create your "instrument". Try to only play when the dropping "notes" hit the white divider. Have fun!
During remote learning, students have been using Quizlet to review music symbols and instruments of the orchestra. Use the link below to review and practice identifying instruments from all 4 orchestral instrument families--string, woodwind, brass, percussion and a few world instruments that we will be studying in the next few weeks.
Some directions on how to use Quizlet if you have not tried it before:
