March Updates
3/27/18
Temperatures may still be cold in Pennsylvania, but we are enjoying imagining walking on sunny beaches while taking a virtual trip to the Caribbean through our study of Calypso music. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are learning about how Steel Drums are constructed, enthomusicology, and about legendary performer Harry Belafonte.
Students in 2nd grade, 1st grade and Kindergarten are continuing to explore melody and repeated, stepping or skipping melodic patterns in their songs.

Have you ever heard steel drums? These are among the first recycled instruments ever produced. They originated in the islands of Trinidad and Tobago, but quickly spread to other Caribbean islands like Jamaica as well. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are learning about these instruments and Calypso style music.
Students in 2nd grade are playing instruments with a song about a very funny sounding old car. And Kindergarten and 1st grade are learning about Melody and Pitches. We are using our voices to create sound stories with lots of different high or low pitches.

This week, our students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are putting all the pieces together by singing, discovering musical forms, and playing rhythms they have learned. Second grade are performing their ostinato compositions for their classmates. Kindergarten and 1st grades are practicing performing their steady beats on instruments with different dynamics. We just keep growing our musical skills.
