It is hard to believe it is already October! Our students have been reviewing how to properly play classroom instruments and will be assessed in their performance of African-American songs we have been learning next week. I can't wait to see what our students can do.

African-Americans contributed a lot to music. All grades are learning game songs (sometimes called plays), spirituals and work songs from this cultural tradition. Some of their songs included coded messages. Check out the videos below for examples

Updates:
Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades have been learning how to perform rhythms correctly so they can score in Music Football! All students in 2nd grade have been learning to find the rests in "Hop Old Squirrel" and performing on xylophones with "Go Around the Corn Sally." Kindergarten and 1st grade have been exploring the ABC's of Percussion book and learning how to play lots of percussion instruments.
Next Week:
We will begin our study of the genre of African-American Spirituals and Work songs.

What a wonderful start we have had in music this year! Kindergarten and first grades are busy learning new routines, a Hello Song, and finding out about Boomwhackers. Second and third graders are learning about musical building blocks. We will be using these 2 beat patterns for lots of activities in the coming months. Fourth and fifth grades are "Welcomed Back" with a song, and reviewing forms, tempos, dynamics, and melodic patterns.
Next Week:
Instruments! Classes will be reading the ABC's of Percussion and exploring different instruments from around the world!
